Clustered storage technologies have been available for some time, but only in recent years has clustered storage become a serious topic for consideration in most organizations. In fact, analysts indicate that clustered storage is now one of the most popular solutions adopted in data centers. Given this increasing interest in clusters, many of our customers need to know whether and how our technology works in clustered environments.
NTP Software’s Management of Cluster-Hosted Storage.
The primary benefit of using a cluster is fault tolerance. However, in other ways, storage hosted on clustered servers supports exactly the same features and functions as directly attached storage (DAS). Therefore, cluster-hosted storage is managed by NTP Software’s products in exactly the same manner as storage directly attached to a simple Windows® server. All of NTPS’s applications run without change and are transparent to the cluster itself.
There is neither loss of, nor any change in, the functionality of our products or their ability to manage storage hosted on a cluster. The cluster is seamlessly integrated and transparent to your policy hierarchy. Storage limits, content screening, and automatic file removal are all available on cluster-hosted storage in the same way as they are on a single Windows server, and this is the case regardless of your cluster configuration.
Cluster FAQs
Q: What cluster configurations do your products work with?
A: Our products work with all configurations: active-active, active-passive, and with any number of nodes.
Q: Do some configurations work better than others?
A: No, our products work equally well in all situations.
Q: How do I manage SAN-hosted storage on the cluster?
A: Exactly the same way you would manage Windows server hosted storage. The cluster is a transparent participant in the environment. You create a single set of policies to control all of the storage in the cluster, regardless of which servers are active and which resources they control.
Q: Are your products cluster-aware?
A: Yes.
Q: What licenses do I need?
A: Those products that have server-based licensing require a license for each node.
As these answers demonstrate, NTP Software’s products can be used in clustered environments just as in any storage environment. No matter what configuration you choose for your data center, NTP Software’s technology will enable you to manage your data more effectively and gain insight into your storage environment.
