One of the most common problems facing the modern storage administrator is predicting how much free storage is enough over the next planning period. In our travels we hear story after story of storage administrators guessing how much storage they need for a location, department, or even for the main datacenter, with dire results. I would like to share some insights with you into these kinds of situations, and why you need the right tools to take the guessing out of predicting future storage needs.
A typical scenario is when a storage administrator needs to request additional storage for the coming calendar year, say for a department NAS. In this case let's say they assumed the department would need 2 TB, given the number of users and the amount of space they already had on the NAS. The purchase gets approved and by January things are fine with lots of free space. But when spring rolls around, the 2 TB has all but evaporated and with July more storage needs to be ordered to keep pace. Their analysis was not strong enough.
These kinds of scenarios frustrate management and cause them to lose faith in storage administrators' ability to adequately plan for future storage requirements.
The problem isn't guessing wrong, it is guessing in the first place. We are supposed to be technology people which means we use hard data, real analysis, and trends to make decisions. Decisions based on those facts are supportable, even if they need adjustment. However, in today's storage environments it is nearly impossible to analyze usage and accurately predict future storage requirements unless you have robust tools to make projections. NTP Software Storage M&A® addresses this critical need.
NTP Software Storage M&A® analyzes your environment and provides storage growth projections, down to the volume level, that allow you to use historical data to predict the future. Storage M&A projections take the usage growth over time and plot it on an easy-to-read graph. You can customize the graph timeline so you can see how big a volume will grow over the next 6, 12 or even 18 months, and plan your hardware purchases accordingly.
With these projections you can have confidence that your planning for future storage requirements is based on hard data and solid analysis, not guesswork.
