Patrick Hynds
Sr. Storage Architect, NTP Software
Many companies rely on logs to tell them that something is wrong in their storage environment. However, in client after client I see mountains of logs and piles of information that are accumulated, but never actually read or acted upon. Logs that are not acted upon are useless and really just amount to a waste of space. But the solution is not to stop logging.
Instead, the solution is to get a handle on analyzing and acting on important information in those logs. The crux of the problem is that the really important messages are buried amongst the voluminous innocuous messages of no consequence.
What if there was a consultant who could look over all your logs and point out the messages you really wanted to know about? Imagine being informed about reoccurring events that show patterns that are pertinent to the health of your storage environment. That would be a valuable but costly proposition to be done by a human. Even if you could afford such a person, the volume of data at times is too extensive to be analyzed in a timely manner manually. The best approach is an automated solution.
This is where NTP Software Storage Events and Alerts Manager™ (SEAM) comes in. It serves the role of the consultant I just described by letting you define what events matter in your environment and notifying you when they occur. It can even notify you when events occur in rapid succession, or a specified number of times over a given time period.
Even vigilant IT departments can miss warning signs in their logs, so it is a task screaming out for automation. Other environmental situations, such as loss of contact with a remote system, can also be monitored using SEAM.
Watch for future articles here on exactly how to get the most out of the treasure trove of logs and system information in your environment by leveraging the many options available in this exciting new product.
